James Webb Space Telescope Discoveries Challenge Theories About Asteroid Psyche’s Origin

Published by TMS On August 18, 2024

Recent findings from the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) have introduced new uncertainties about asteroid 16 Psyche. Known for its high iron content, Psyche was previously considered a potential remnant of a protoplanet, providing a valuable opportunity to study the early solar system. However, JWST has detected hydrated minerals on its surface, including hydroxyl and possibly water. This discovery complicates the current understanding of Psyche's composition. If these minerals originated from impacts with water-rich asteroids, it would align with one theory. However, if the hydration comes from within Psyche itself, it could mean that Psyche is not the core remnant of a protoplanet as previously believed. This raises the possibility that Psyche might have migrated from a colder region of the solar system beyond the "snow line," where water and other volatiles are more common. The uneven distribution of hydration suggests impacts are the likely source. NASA's upcomi...

Jupiter-Like Exoplanet With Iron Winds and Molten Metal Rain Discovered by Researchers

Published by TMS On September 21, 2024

Astronomers have discovered that the exoplanet WASP-76b, located about 634 light-years away in the Pisces constellation, experiences extreme weather conditions unlike anything on Earth. With temperatures soaring to around 4,350 degrees Fahrenheit (2,400 degrees Celsius), the planet's atmosphere is ravaged by high-speed iron winds and molten metal rain. These findings highlight how truly alien the atmospheres of exoplanets can be, especially on "hot Jupiters" like WASP-76b. http://dlvr.it/TDX994
